Short-term rentals have been a controversial subject in recent years, with more municipalities implementing rules and licensing systems. Currently, short-term rentals are allowed by permit in the City of Toronto, Vaughan, Mississauga, Oshawa, Brampton, and Milton. However, they are prohibited in Markham.
Here are some tips for property owners to avoid unauthorized short-term rental listings at early stage:
1. Speak to the building securities and neihbours regularly
2. Check with city’s short-term rental registration department of permit record (E.X: Open Data of City of Toronto)
3. Browse online short-term rental portals (Air B & B, Booking.com etc.)
4. Report to property management office if there is anything unusual you observe
5. Clear communications with tenants if leasing property including no subletting clause and condo rule/declaration if applicable
